Has anybody on here done the Bob Graham Round, either running (unlikely) or hiking, or even just significant parts of it?

Basically ever since I first heard of it, when reading Trail Magazine several years ago, I've wanted to do it. For those of you who don't know, the BGR is considered one of the toughest ultra-distance runs in the UK. It's 70+ miles long, covers 42 peaks of the Lake District and involves 27,000 feet of ascent which is the same as climbing and descending Everest. The official challenge is to run the whole thing in under 24 hours.

Here's a handy little graphic that someone made to show you exactly what I just said:

So yes, whereas I don't think I'll be running it any time soon I thought about hiking it over 3 days. The thing is that I am surprisingly unfamiliar with the Lake District and so I thought the best way to see as much of the Lakes as possible would be to bag myself 42 of its main peaks in one go. I'm all about efficiency ;)

Does anyone have any experience with it?

Wow, looks like a trek indeed! 3-5 days I think would be optimal for something that long, in order to take it all in.

Well it's divided into 5 clear sections, though people hike it in 3 days which is about 25 miles a day. Now that is a damn long trek when you consider the ascents involved and if the weather blows up then that's going to slow you right down even more.

But the scenery is awesome! (if you don't end up in cloud the whole time).

I could definitely spend a few days up and around there! And there's always a little voice at the back of my head saying "Dave, you could run it! You could run it, Dave!" despite never having run over 30 miles in one go, which was on flat ground and about 5 years ago.

But the maths sound simple enough. 75 miles in 24 hours = an average speed of about 3mph. It almost sounds quite easy when you think of it like that. But then you remember that plodding along at 3mph for 24 HOURS is a long time. And then throw in the ridiculous ascent and you quickly see why it's a super elite challenge. But still, that damn voice...

It looks amazing, though I don't think I'd ever attempt the 24 hours. I remember reading into it a year or so ago.

There's also one in Snowdonia en.wikipedia.org/wik... ...kley_Round

Oh wow, I'd never heard of the Paddy Buckley Round before! That looks mental.

Apparently it's not an official 24 hour challenge because the guy who invented it (I presume Paddy Buckley) didn't manage to do it in under 24 hours. But the world record is 17 hours 42 minutes?? Anyone who knows any of the mountains or locations in that map will know that is an insaaaaane time for such a distance.

I'm liking how you can just create your own "Round" by putting your name on it, and you don't even have to complete it yourself!

Coming soon, this summer: The Brave Dave Round. A 48 hour challenge which I guarantee that no one has ever bothered trying before (and probably never will, regardless as to whether or not I complete it myself). By the way, I'm not kidding. I do have a silly challenge for myself this summer and this thread has just given me a name for it (albeit slightly unimaginative).
