I'd wanted to try a grade 3 scramble for a while, to see what one is actually like. Every time I've been up Crib Goch I've looked over at the Clogwyn Y Person Arete and figured that I'd have to climb it at some point. So I did. And Danny did as well.

Even though I mention it several times in the video, it's worth just saying it in here as well: This is a very dangerous scramble and Danny and I did it as equals, NOT as mountain leader and client. I was originally going to do it by myself but Danny was in the area so we decided to scramble it together. And I'm glad that we did. It makes a big difference having someone else there to bump ideas off and to help route-find.

The most important thing to have in a scrambling buddy is knowing that they are not going to freak out or panic. We went up without ropes (not recommended, but much more exciting, and faster) which meant that one major slip and we'd be dead. There were some ridiculously high and sheer drops up there (especially on Parson's Nose) which you have to hang off whilst looking for the route, and the route wasn't always very obvious. Keeping a cool head is essential and I knew Danny was able to do that.

Conclusion: Grade 3 scrambles are extreme, exposed, pretty scary in parts and very exciting. KIDS, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! Or on a mountain. Watch people on YouTube do it instead.
