Me and the fam are doing a pseudo-Three Peaks fund raising event late July - early August; raising money for Kidney Research UK and Mountain Rescue England and Wales (50/50 split)

It's spanning a couple of weeks with the British Transplant Games in Liverpool wedged in the middle, which my son competes in with the Manchester Children's Team.

It starts in Scotland climbing Ben Nevis on 23rd July, Scafell Pike on 26th July and finishing off Snowdon on the 4th August. We plan to include several peaks in the Lakes, including Great Gable and Kirkfell plus a wildcamp, and Tryfan (south ridge) whilst we're in Wales.

We've done Snowdon and Scafell Pike before but Ben Nevis is a new mountain for us.

If anyone wants to join us for Snowdon you're more than welcome.

Good stuff, Penny! Glad to see you're planning to do Snowdon in mid-summer. I was up there a few days ago and it's not the easiest of conditions.

And don't worry about Ben Nevis (not that I think you are worrying about it). It might be the highest of all the mountains but it's also the easiest (weather pending). Will you be doing any other mountains up in Scotland? It's a long way to drive to only climb one of them.

They prefer Snowdon in the winter..

We're planning to walk more in the Lakes hence just doing Ben Nevis. A Scottish trip will be on the cards in a few years time.

We're planning on walking Ben Nevis for the first time in August, just a few days after you'll be there. I might end up doing it on my own though as I have a 4 year old who I may not be able to carry up the whole way. We're going to trial run Snowdon in a few months to see how that turns out. I wish you all the best for your walks! It's great to see kids outside enjoying the walks :)

You've got some sturdy kids, Penny! Impressive stuff!

Haha, CCStar, I definitely wouldn't want to have to carry a 4 year old plus usual backpack kit up and down Ben Nevis. That's an awkward age for being on the hills. Too small to walk it all themselves, too big to carry.

Cheers Dave, 'sturdy'... that's a new one! Hahaaa.

ccstar: T'other half carried Auryn all the way up Snowdon, when he was 7 months old, it almost killed him. Carrying a 4 year old up Ben Nevis? I'd pass on that! ;) I think Bronwyn was 5 when we took them up Fan-y-Big, next to Pen-y-Fan, in the Brecons (2359 feet/719m). She was striding off ahead of everyone so I wouldn't underestimate what they can do but no-one wants a cranky kid half way up a mountain demanding to be carried, so start small.

She walked up most of Pen Y Fan (from storey arms not on the tourist route) when she was 2 and 1/2 and I also carried her the whole way up Cadair Idris when she was 3. She loves being outdoors so I'm going to give Snowdon a go, partly her walking, partly me carrying. But I think you're right, Ben Nevis might be pushing it a bit.
