Hello All,
I've been around the American Midwest for a while, but mostly tend to keep to myself. I was wondering what some of you experienced folk's thoughts were on carrying protection while hopping. Obviously the potential for interpersonal danger is a little higher out on the rails; I've known some people who carry, pepper spray, telescoping batons, knives, etc. for protection. However, I have also known people who carry nothing.
I recently met a fellow who carries a pistol for protection while hopping. He is properly licenced, and makes sure to only ride through states where his licence is valid.
What do you do to keep yourself safe from hooligans?
Have you ever encountered a situation where you have needed to protect yourself from hooligans?
Do you have any other extraneous experience concerning this topic?

I am interested in hearing your thoughts!

Thanks,
-MM

That's a very middle American perspective haha. My "weapon" is a smile and a friendly attitude. I carry a pocketknife but I only use it as a tool and not a weapon. My friend carries bear spray, and luckily he's never had to use it.

Phoenix,
I agree! A smile and a friendly attitude is always the best line of defense. I've rarely had want for anything beyond that, but I'm curious if anybody else has found themselves in less fortunate circumstances.
Thanks for replying!
