Hi,

Does anyone know if it's possible to rent/borrow a SPOT satellite tracker?

Thanks

Hi Ben!

It would seem that you can in the US but I couldn't find anything in the UK.

I'd not even heard of these things before. It sounds pretty cool, Something that beams your location to an ap which others can access to see where you are, right? And you can also set off an alarm which sends Mountain Rescue your coordinates? Not bad.

Hi Dave,

Yeah they seem like pretty good bits of kit especially if walking solo.

It wakes up every 10 minutes, locates you via GPRS, then updates your position to a website that people can log into and track you. It can also send a "I'm OK message", a non emergency "I need help" message to family or friends and the SOS message to the emergency services.

The down side its the yearly subscription of around £118. Not too bad if you are out every other weekend but for a couple of times a year it makes it costly. Family and friends might think your life is worth it though.

Oh right, I didn't realise it had a subscription. But then I guess you're using a specific set of satellites which won't exactly be cheap to lease so the company has to make ongoing money from it. Like you said, probably only worth it if you're using it all the time and going off to all sorts of dodgy places, or peace of mind for people if they're being led in a group or something. I think that for now I'll stick with my hiking-safety strategy of hoping for the best :P
