Hi everyone.

I've wanted to go to Iceland for a while now, it's not possible at the moment because I'm only 17 and in college, but once I'm 18, I'm determined to go there as soon as I can. It's such a beautiful country and has some amazing mountains and waterfalls. Maybe I'll even try hiking there.

I was wondering if anyone's ever been there and if you could give me some information and tips. What I should bring, when is the best time to go, how much does it cost, or anything you think I should know.

P.S. If anyone's been to Vestmannaeyjar, could you tell me about about that, I really want to go there on my trip.

Thanks

Hi Lewis.

This was my Iceland experience. Note: It was a very last minute trip and we really didn't do much planning. Plus we were only there for about a week and the weather wasn't the best, so probably not the greatest example of how to do Iceland :P

Thanks, what not to do is just as good haha

My sister-in-law lives in Iceland so I've been a fair few times, try not to go in the winter months (although that's the time I prefer), obviously you'll want to see all the touristy type places like Geyser and the Blue Lagoon but if you can rent a car /hitchhike and get out on the "ring" road, go to places like Gljúfrabúi waterfall or Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon which are not as highly visited.
There's plenty to see and do but in the winter you are going to find yourself stuck in certain areas unless you have access to a 4x4. I did want to go to Svalbard last year but then I heard Chris Evans going on about it ... back to Snowdon :-)

Signal, how on earth did you remember how to spell "Fjaðrárgljúfur"??

And yeah, I think that exploring Iceland in Winter outside of the main tourist spots would only be for the more hardcore of travellers. On the plus side though prices will be about half of what they are in Summer.

I didn't my sister-in-law helped... I just asked what was those places I went to last year, she did the rest bless her.
