I have some past experiences at train hopping in Australia as a teenager. I managed 4 or 5 hops but to be honest, it has been a few years, I'm now 26.
Starting from April next year, I will attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine all 2,190 Miles or 3524 Kilometres for us Aussies. After the trail, I'm heading across the border to Montreal to catch up with some old friends for a few weeks. Afterwards, I'm planning on train hopping across to Vancouver with a few stop in-between, stopping in Toronto, Kelowna ( Monte Creek if it’s viable ) and then Vancouver. At the moment I'm looking for any resources or advice that people can help me with I've found a few items so far:
Canadian Pacific Railway Map
Canadian National Railway Map
Canadian Rail Atlas
Rail Frequencies
The Foamer Files
Cheers guys.
Did you have trouble finding rideable cars?
Yes! most of my rides where local to Perth in Western Australia and back then the cars they where using were not hopper friendly but there where two or three per train that could be hopped.
Which company was operating the train?
Most of the trains I was catching where SCT and I would suggest using them if you can.
If you're going to do it you will probably have to catch an interstate train most of these are using the new well cars using the double stack system but you will also have issues because they still use flatbed cars that are edge to edge with the container with no room for a hopper.
I will try to get you some more info when i have the time :)
gab thanks for the offer I will post more on the forums when it comes closer to the date and keep you updated.
Also Brave_Dave just watched your latest video sorry to hear about your experience that totally sucks but at least your not locked up! It's definitely something to take into consideration for my trip!
